Maybe a TV show...

According to the website GossipCop, Lionsgate Films would really like to find a way to continue the Twilight movie series after the final* installment is released this fall.

*Here's hoping, anyway.

Sickening

According to ABC News, Twilight: Breaking Dawn-induced seizures are a Real Thing, so if your significant other is dragging you to see it for the third time this week, you can now fake a plausible medical emergency to get out of watching at least part of it. (I don't know when they get to the birth scene, which is apparently what triggers the seizures, but I'm assuming it's fairly late in the movie. Still, every little bit helps, and this should at least get you out of watching it a fourth time.)

Drink like a vampire

If you're both A) a big Twilight fan, and B) of legal drinking age, you might want to celebrate today's big movie release with People magazine's suggestions for Twilight-themed cocktails, including "The Edward" and "New Moon".

Blood feud? I'd like to think so.

Heh. According to THR, Anne Rice is not a fan of Stephenie Meyer's Twilight series. Ms. Rice recently wrote:
"[My characters] feel sorry for vampires that sparkle in the sun... They would never hurt immortals who choose to spend eternity going to high school over and over again in a small town--anymore than they would hurt the physically disabled or the mentally challenged. My vampires possess gravitas. They can afford to be merciful."
Pot? Meet kettle. Anyone who willingly sold the rights to the 1994 film adaptation of Interview With the Vampire has no room to be talking about gravitas.

Also, I'm pretty sure Ms. Meyer can dry any tears she might be shedding over Ms. Rice's comments with her massive pile of money. Y'know... in case you were worried about her delicate feelings.

There's a "corny" pun I'm going to skip here.

Wow... just yesterday, I was complaining that cool book-related events rarely happen near my house, and then Megan called last night to inform me that the always-entertaining Rutledge Corn Maze has chosen to feature an image from the Breaking Dawn movie this year. Sadly, this isn't a book I care about (like, at all), but I think it still qualifies as a cool book-related event. That's two in one week!

Dreamy!

Last week, The Beat posted the cover image for Yen Press's upcoming Twilight: The Graphic Novel #2, and it is, frankly, hilarious. Behold:

It's possible that Yen will shell out for a print job that allows Edward's skin to sparkle, but I'm hoping they leave him just like this: a pasty, gray-skinned, sweaty-looking zombie.

Sense and sensibility and OH, MY EYES

Ugh, another one?

JUST STOP TRYING, HARPER COLLINS. WE'RE NEVER EVER GOING TO CONFUSE JANE AUSTEN AND STEPHENIE MEYER.

The curse of the delicate flower

If you're a braver person than I am, check out the recent Twilight spoof that aired as part of the Simpsons' annual "Treehouse of Horror" episode. I was too embarrassed to watch more than a minute or so, but I'm told it's very funny. Plus, the Edward character is voiced by Daniel Radcliffe (a.k.a. Harry Potter), so that's two literary shout-outs for the price of one.

Because *all* vampires need regular manicures

My goodness. Check out the complete line of Twilight-inspired nail polish from Twilight Beauty:

Which vampire wears the Malibu Barbie hot pink, do you suppose?

Ew! But also funny!

Salon has very kindly put together a slideshow round-up of the "10 Most Baffling Twilight Products". They range from G-rated weirdness (like the Edward-shaped body pillow) to other, less SFW options, so click through at your peril!

Cringe-worthy

I finally watched the Eclipse trailer, and it is bad. Like, hilariously bad. Everything about it, from the "creepy dudes coming out of the water" bit* to the run-towards-each-other-and-SMASH! battle scene has been done before--and done way better. The acting looks terrible and the CGI worse. I stopped reading this series after the second book, so I don't know how faithfully the movie is following the novel, but I am impressed by how terrible this looks. It's like they were purposefully aiming for "camp classic" status.

*Turns out vampires aren't inconvenienced by wearing sopping-wet jeans as battle-wear. Who knew? It must be part of their special, sparkly magic...

Truth in advertising

99% of the cover art for the upcoming Twilight graphic novel is unremarkable...

...but I am impressed by the way they made [what is presumably] Edward's hand ever-so-slightly blue. Way to play up the fact that he's a dead guy!

In a word: Huh?

Forget all that Jay Leno/Conan nonsense, the real TV headscratcher of the moment is the idea of a reality show set in Forks, WA, the setting for Stephenie Meyer's enormously popular Twilight series.

And no, I'm not kidding.

Harsh, man.

A 22-year-old Chicago woman has spent two nights in jail and now faces up to three years in prison after taping less than four minutes of New Moon. The young woman was visiting a Rosemont movie theater to celebrate her sister's birthday, and claims that she was merely taking pictures and short videos of her fellow party-goers (an account backed up by the contents of her camera, by the way). Nonetheless, the theater managers insisted on pressing charges, and the woman has been slapped with a rarely-invoked felony charge designed to prevent audience members from recording new-release movies in order to sell bootleg copies.

Let this be a lesson to you, dear readers: if you absolutely must go see New Moon, make sure there's no photographic evidence of your lapse in taste and judgement.

I. Am. Appalled.

No, seriously.

I was poking around my local Barnes and Noble last night, and I ran across this:

My first reaction was a snicker. I mean, thank goodness Emily Bronte's novel has finally been approved by somebody who matters, you know? Nothing says "immortal classic" like a thumbs-up from the fictional protagonists of what has been aptly described as "the world's longest and most ridiculous perfume commercial".

But then I saw this:

I don't even know what grosses me out more. The blatantly derivative cover art and font? That they chose "Darcy had never been so bewitched by any woman as he was by her" as one of the taglines, implying that there are some kind of supernatural shenanigans afoot? The fact that the back of the book invites readers to compare the Elizabeth-and-Darcy romance with the Edward-and-Bella one? HarperCollins doesn't even publish Twilight, for Pete's sake! Are they that hideously desperate for sales? Do they think teen readers aren't going to notice a slight difference in the writing styles of Stephenie Meyer and Jane Austen? Or do they not care, and just figure a sale's a sale, and truth in advertising be damned?

Now, I can get over this. (Probably.) But what's next? Nonfiction books about wolves offering to teach us about Jacob's full-time furry cousins? George and Martha with new black-and-red cover art featuring one of Martha's roses (tulips?) lying limply across the page? Some combos just don't work, and a Pride and Prejudice comparison with Twilight is one of 'em.

Bleagh. Somebody needs to stop this train; I want to get off.

A high-end store sinks to new lows

I cannot believe this: Nordstrom is producing a line of Twilight-inspired clothing.

Sure, we'd all expect this from stores like Hot Topic, Wet Seal, and the more cost-conscious department stores (after all, what is a t-shirt like this one, if not the teen-girl equivalent of a Hannah Montana hoodie?), but I can't believe this line is being sold at Nordstrom, purveyor of $600 prom dresses, $185 candles, and—my favorite—$170 baby snow suits. (Sure, the kid will only fit into it for about a week and a half, but hey: it's Juicy couture!)

At least they're still charging sky-high prices, even for this truly hideous plaid shirt/dress-thing. It's a small comfort, but better than nothing.

An artist's canvas (shoes)

Wow. Handpainted converse with the Twilight actors on 'em, costing $125? Will this particular cottage industry ever bottom out?

*sigh*

It was only to be expected.

MTV's Movie Blog has announced an upcoming movie adaptation of Twilight author Stephenie Meyer's novel The Host.

Are there any actresses out there specializing in glum facial expressions and unwashed hair? Because while I highly doubt Kristen Stewart would be willing to sign up for another Meyer blockbuster, they are going to need another actress with a similar skill set.

Twilight + wedding dresses = girl-entertainment jackpot?

In what I can only describe as a desperate attempt to attract really young readers with the fashion equivalent of fanfiction, InStyle magazine asked several designers to sketch Bella Swann's wedding dress.

I've always liked looking at the exaggerated lines of fashion designs, so this marketing ploy aimed at the Twilight demographic worked on me. (Okay, and it helped that it was free.) Only one of the dresses looks anything like the dress described in the book*, but the pictures sure are pretty.

*Which I haven't read, but InStyle informs me that Bella's mother tells her that she looks like she'd just "stepped out of an Austen movie", so I'm assuming that means Regency, right?

You wouldn't like me when I'm angry.

Heh. I finally got around to watching the New Moon trailer, and I'm sorry to say that the hokey boy-into-wolf CGI in the first teaser does not appear to have been fixed:

And the last line of the trailer just cracked me up, possibly because the actor (30 pounds heavier or not) looks like he's thirteen, tops, so what should have been a mega-dramatic moment was veering into temper tantrum territory.
