Maybe a TV show...

According to the website GossipCop, Lionsgate Films would really like to find a way to continue the Twilight movie series after the final* installment is released this fall.

*Here's hoping, anyway.

Price-gouging at Hogwarts

The NY Times recently posted an article about what they describe as the "unexpected, turbocharged success of the $265 million Potter playland" (i.e., Universal's Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park in Florida). The article and its accompanying photographs make the park look pretty cool... but I can't help but think about the blogger FoodJunk's recent reviews of two Harry Potter-themed foodstuffs: Pink Coconut Ice and Pumpkin Juice. Neither one of 'em sounded enticing, and their ludicrously high prices left me feeling rather depressed about the park as a whole.

Higher and higher

Salon has posted a fascinating (and quite angry) article on the rising price of new e-books. I'm not sure that two e-books costing more than their printed-and-bound equivalents qualifies as a "trend", but I always appreciate it when e-book enthusiasts acknowledge the lost financial opportunities of donating (for the tax break) or selling one's books.

The fall of the book-selling empire?

Further hints of the crumbling world of major chain bookstores: Barnes and Noble is considering putting itself up for sale. (Specifically, they're exploring "strategic alternatives", one of which is selling.) My hometown contains both a Borders and a Barnes and Noble, and you can see that market factors are hitting 'em hard (limited hours, diminishing stock, fewer employees), while the five or so local, independent booksellers in the area seem to be doing okay. Wave of the future, or just a fluke of my hippie town? Only time will tell....

We approve.

As longtime readers of the site know, I love reading about frugality. Sadly, Wordcandy hardly ever receives books on this subject, which means I have to either wait patiently for library copies or actually buy the books myself. This is particularly irritating when the cheapskate how-to guide in question is only, say, 190 pages and published as a $30 hardcover.

Anyway, this is why I was so pleased to read Salon.com's interview with Jeff Yeager, whose recent book The Cheapskate Next Door is a solid 256 pages and costs $12.99*. I like to see people practicing what they preach, you know?

*Note: Still too expensive for me to actually buy, but we're getting closer. Try <$5, guys.

Returned (in part) to the original owner

Newspaper publisher E.W. Scripps Co. is selling the licensing rights for Charles Schulz's 'Peanuts' characters to Iconix Brand Group Inc. (owners of Joe Boxer and London Fog) for a whopping $175 million. Schulz's family will also gain 20% ownership of the unit that controls the characters. Schulz struggled for decades to win back the rights to his work, and this new "ownership interest" will give his heirs a far greater ability to moderate the way his creations are used.

Fun with taxes...

In honor of Tax Day, allow us to point out that you can find copies of Jean Johnson and Scott Bittle's excellent Where Does the Money Go? for as little as $5.99 online.

Sorry, Canada!

I ran across an interesting article about the difference between American and Canadian book prices. Canadians pay approximately 30% more per book, despite the fact that the Canadian and American dollar have been hovering at basically the same level since 2007. Some of that cost is due to a Canadian import law that allows American publishers to slap a 10% markup on books sold in Canada (to offset import costs and shipping and handling fees), but the remaining 20% is apparently pure tough luck.
