There's a "corny" pun I'm going to skip here.

Wow... just yesterday, I was complaining that cool book-related events rarely happen near my house, and then Megan called last night to inform me that the always-entertaining Rutledge Corn Maze has chosen to feature an image from the Breaking Dawn movie this year. Sadly, this isn't a book I care about (like, at all), but I think it still qualifies as a cool book-related event. That's two in one week!

Poseidon's Fish Market: Rick Riordan is coming to Olympia!

When I hear about really, seriously, insanely cool book-related events, they always seem to be happening thousands of miles away. But not today, dear readers. Today I am informed that Rick Riordan—one of my very favorite YA authors—is coming to my hometown for an incredible-sounding event that is free, open to the public, totally awesome, and within walking distance of my house. If I was the kind of person who bought lottery tickets, I'd be heading out to the store right now, because clearly my luck is in.

Read-a-thon

Five students recently set a world record after reading aloud from the complete works of historian and former Dominican President Juan Bosch for more than 300 straight hours. Their goal was to raise awareness about books in the Dominican Republic, and they hoped to encourage business owners to donate to local libraries. Unfortunately, less than 40% of primary schools in the Dominic Republic have a library, (and many of those that do are stocked with out-of-date materials), so here's hoping their efforts are recognized.

Sing-a-long with LeVar Burton

Um. I'm not sure I can sign off on the idea of a Reading Rainbow flash mob, where an unknown number of participants gather to sing the show's theme song. Reading Rainbow was a big part of my childhood, but isn't there a less insanely embarrassing way to promote literacy? Because Donald Glover sings a lot better than I do....

Maggie Stiefvater tries on the one-book format

I've been keeping an eye out for news from BookExpo America, and Publishers Weekly did a nice summary post on the big announcements in YA and children's publishing. There are several titles I'm anticipating, but I think I'm most interested in Maggie Stiefvater's standalone novel The Scorpio Races (although I'm really hoping she ends up with a better cover). It's due out in October. I liked Ms. Stiefvater's first book, Shiver, much better before she turned it into a series, so I'm excited to see what she'll do with a concrete ending date.

And who doesn't love free nail polish?

If you're going to be in Southern California in early June, you might want to add the various promotional events for the Go Fug Yourself ladies' upcoming YA book Spoiled to your day planner. In addition to whatever kind of undoubtedly-awesome interactions the writers have planned, there will also be free bottles of O.P.I. nail polish!

Doodling for a better planet

Publishers Weekly has an article up about the authors and illustrators involved in May 12th's National Doodle Day. Daniel Pinkwater, Neil Gaiman, Eric Carle, Mo Willems, and Jon Scizezka are among the authors contributing to the event, which raises money and awareness for families and individuals affected by Neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that affects one in every 2,500 births. The doodles will be auctioned off on eBay, so start saving your pennies now!

Knit Your Own Royal Wedding

I don't care about knitting or England's royal family, but Fiona Goble's new how-to book Knit Your Own Royal Wedding is undeniably adorable:

How's that for a wedding souvenir? She even got the princes' perma-flush right!

It's still not April 1st, right?

Huh. NPR informs me that the 4th Annual Quidditch World Cup is taking place at De Witt Clinton Park in New York City this very weekend, and will feature more than 60 different teams from high schools and universities across the country.

Fellow Pacific Northwesteners take note:

Mockingjay author Suzanne Collins will be visiting Powell's Books in Portland, Oregon on Sunday, November 7th from 12:00 to 1:30 p.m. Due to a hand injury, Ms. Collins will be stamping books rather than signing them... but she'll be using a special commemorative stamp created especially for her 2010 Mockingjay tour, if that makes you feel any better.

27 days and counting...

Portland, Oregon's Powell's Books is hosting a midnight release party for Mockingjay, the third and final book in Suzanne Collins's bestselling "Hunger Games" trilogy. The shindig will start at 9:00 p.m. and include a costume contest, trivia battle, and giveaways. Sadly, this is a Monday night event (August 23rd), so attendance might be limited to people who don't have to get up early on Tuesday (read: shrieking teenagers).

New York manga fans take note!

In a bit of totally random news, the New York City Macy's store is having a Fruits Basket event. According to the press release:

Fruits Basket, the world's # 1 shojo manga, is coming to Macys! [This] story of a family with an ancient curse and the orphaned high school girl who changes their lives forever, has captivated the hearts and imagination of children all over the world.

On Saturday, May 16th at 2pm in Kids on 7, meet your favorite Fruits Basket characters, enter our costume contest dressed as your favorite character, and have your photo taken with Tohru and friends. With any kids purchase of $75 or more, receive a Fruits Basket DVD and book series!

Seriously, how big are these kids' allowances?

According to Cinematical, Twilight fans at a Florida convention were willing to pay thirty dollars to get their picture taken with Kimbra Hickey, the apple-clutching hand model featured on the first book in the mega-popular series.

I'm torn: half of me is appalled by this news (Thirty dollars?! Have they no shame?), but the other half is beginning to wonder if the combination of Stephenie Meyer + tween girls with deep pockets really will be the force that saves our economy.

Literary fundraising

The Shirley Jackson Awards, honoring outstanding work in the genres of psychological suspense, horror, and the "dark fantastic", is currently holding an online lottery to raise money for their award.

For those of you who aren't familiar with the name, Shirley Jackson (1916-1965) was the author of several horror novels, including such classics as The Haunting of Hill House and We Have Always Lived in the Castle. She also wrote one of the most unforgettable* short stories of the 20th century: 1948's "The Lottery" (thus the lottery-style fundraiser).

This event is running through February 23rd, so be sure to check out the prize list soon--there's some good stuff on there!

*Seriously. You might want to forget it, but no dice.

Woot! (Part I)

It is a day of wondrous anime- and manga-related news, dear readers. At its New York Comic Con panel, North American publisher Yen Press announced on Saturday that it has picked up the license for the sixth volume of Kiyohiko Azuma's Yotsuba&!.

Yen Press already endeared themselves to me by rescuing the many titles abandoned by ICE Kunion, and now this! That's it: they are definitely going on the Wordcandy Christmas card list this year....

But will there be snacks?

Award-winning cookbook writer Mark Bittman, author of the bestselling books How to Cook Everything and How to Cook Everything Vegetarian, is going to be visiting Powell's Books in Portland tonight, chatting about his new release Food Matters, a book described as "a plan for responsible eating that's as good for the planet as it is for your weight and your health".

If any of our readers attend, could you please ask Mr. Bittman why they didn't feature any middle-aged ladies/hot young guy combos on that stupid show?
