Sorry, Canada!

I ran across an interesting article about the difference between American and Canadian book prices. Canadians pay approximately 30% more per book, despite the fact that the Canadian and American dollar have been hovering at basically the same level since 2007. Some of that cost is due to a Canadian import law that allows American publishers to slap a 10% markup on books sold in Canada (to offset import costs and shipping and handling fees), but the remaining 20% is apparently pure tough luck.

Reason number #327 I want to go to Beijing...

...would be this bookstore.

Sadly, I suspect I'm a mite too tall to fit in. Also, I don't speak Chinese. Oh, and I'm 30 years old.

But I'd still go.

Whoa.

I'm no fan of book desecration, but this is amazing:

It seems to be part of a series of promotional images for a bookstore in the Czech Republic. I'm not sure how it's made, or even if it's a real carving, but it sure looks cool.

Borders keeps on trucking

In business news, Borders Books appears to be holding in there, despite some ugly returns in the third quarter and, of course, the across-the-board grim economic outlook. The company has cut expenses and lowered its debt and inventory in the past year, and is no longer up for sale.

Please Note: If Borders would like to get more of MY retail dollars, I'd recommend improving their cafe menus, because the cookies they sell are straight-up gross.

Why, Borders? Why?

According to this article (from the business section of The New York Times), the Borders Group is planning to install two flat-screen TVs per bookstore, allowing them to broadcast "original programming, advertisements, news and weather".

Wow, thank you, Borders! I'm sure your original programming will be absolutely fascinating*, and c'mon: who could possibly get enough advertisements? Sure, we can already see 'em everywhere from airports to movie theaters, but I bet watching a commercial for the next episode of Lost or Geico insurance will really enrich my book-buying experience.

*Five bucks says it will consist of mind-numbing interviews with authors trying to find something diplomatic to say about the terrible film adaptation of their books.
