I'm told this builds character.

As you all know, we here at Wordcandy love Kiyohiko Azuma's manga Yotsuba&! with the fire of a thousand suns. So imagine our chagrin when we discovered that the series' current U.S. publisher (Yen Press) has decided to hold off on releasing volume ten until October.

Seriously, why don't the various publishers of Yotsuba&! ever seem to love us back? Volume ten came out in Japan last November, so why the wait? Is it because Azuma himself is slow to release new material, so Yen would rather space out their releases to match his pace? If so, I really wish they'd stop. If these books are out in Japan, I'd like the earliest possible opportunity to read 'em in English. I know I'll still have long waits between volumes, but trust me: I am way more likely to forgive Azuma himself than I am the American publishing house that sat on the series like Horton hatching the egg.

Azumanga Daioh: Omnibus, by Kiyohiko Azuma

I have mixed feelings about the recent omnibus edition of Yotsuba&!'s Kiyohiko Azuma's Azumanga Daioh. I'm all for anything that exposes this wonderful series to a wider audience, but Yen Press's "improvements" to ADV's original translation failed to warm my cold, judgmental heart.

Azumanga Daioh is one of my favorite manga titles. Over the course of four volumes, Azuma chronicles the everyday life of a group of Japanese high school girls. The series is told through four-panel strips, although many of the "punchlines" only make sense in the context of the ongoing storyline. In addition to being ridiculously funny, Azumanga Daioh knocks the Bechdel Rule out of the park. Boys come up in conversation occasionally, but Azuma's heroines spend most of their time chatting about homework, culture festivals, and vacation plans—with frequent breaks to discuss vital issues like Santa's treatment of his reindeer (is taking advantage of Rudolph's red nose comparable to using the shine on a bald man's head?) and the mystery of what "I.T." actually stands for.

The now-defunct publishing house ADV published their translation of Azumanga Daioh in 2003 and 2004, selling the volumes for $9.99 apiece. Yen Press picked up the license last year, and priced their omnibus edition at a mere $24.99. Normally, I'd be nominating them for publishing sainthood, but several things about Yen's translation rubbed me the wrong way. Some of their extremely literal translations worked, but others will be distractingly unfamiliar to Western readers—and I'm never going to forgive replacing one character's Kansai dialect with a wince-inducing Southern accent. (Think "Ah ain't" and "Ah reckon".)

ADV's translation frequently erred in the other direction, making too many adjustments for English-speaking readers*. On the other hand, I understood all of their jokes, and nobody talked like Elly May Clampett—two significant virtues, in my opinion. Both versions have their faults, and I sincerely appreciate Yen Press's efforts to keep this series in print... but I'm sorry to say that if I could only save one version from a burning building, ADV's translation would still get my vote.

*Plus, their books were chock-full of spelling errors and typos. There were a few screw-ups in the Yen translation, too, but nowhere near as many.

And the price is so very, very right!

If you're a reader of fanfiction (fan-penned stories set in the worlds of various books/movies/TV shows/etc.), you might want to check out the Yuletide Treasure Fic Exchange, a massive fanfiction archive that features anonymous stories set in a variety of worlds. It's a great source for fanfiction from really obscure sources--there are 'fics for books ranging from Fanny Burney's Evelina to Kiyohiko Azuma's Yotsuba&!.

Minor points

Before I get to the complaining, let me first state that I am sincerely delighted Yen Press has picked up the license for Yotsuba&!, which is one of our all-time favorite series. Thanks, Yen Press! You guys are awesome, and your slightly repackaged editions of Yotsuba&! are both shiny and adorable. Behold:

However... was giving Yotsuba her very own font really necessary? Her various pronouncements are usually strange enough without a quirky font emphasizing the weirdness. And did you have to provide so many footnotes? I mean, if you tell me that a t-shirt reads "Fifteen years old" on page 15, you don't really need to explain it again on page 17. And we actually would have been just fine if you had resisted the desire to translate nonsense Japanese sound effects ("Ba!") into nonsense English sound effects ("Wham!"). We don't mean to quibble, but that's what God gave us context for.

New Azumanga Daioh?

And it's not even my birthday!

AnimeNewsNetwork is reporting that the always awesome Kiyohiko Azuma is creating new strips for the upcoming 10th anniversary edition of his Azumanga Daioh series. There will be sixteen pages of new material featured in each of the three volumes of the reprint.

I was *so* stoked to hear this. Azumanga Daioh is one of my favorite series in any medium, and it's been way too long since we've heard from these characters.

At last!

Yen Press has announced the release dates for the next three(!!!) volumes of Yotsuba&!: volume six comes out in September, volume seven in December, and volume eight in April of next year!

Of course, if my Yotsuba&! luck holds true, these releases will be followed by a year-and-a-half-year-long waiting period, but I'll take what I can get.

Woot! (Part I)

It is a day of wondrous anime- and manga-related news, dear readers. At its New York Comic Con panel, North American publisher Yen Press announced on Saturday that it has picked up the license for the sixth volume of Kiyohiko Azuma's Yotsuba&!.

Yen Press already endeared themselves to me by rescuing the many titles abandoned by ICE Kunion, and now this! That's it: they are definitely going on the Wordcandy Christmas card list this year....

ADV falls off the wagon (again)

We're hearing distressing rumors that ADV is once again in financial difficulties, which means that we'll have to wait even longer to get our hands on the sixth volume of Yotsuba&!.

The original release date was late February, but that obviously didn't happen. Hopefully this rough patch is resolved quickly--nobody wants this series to take another two-year break!

Azuma!

Remember the adorable Yotsuba&! "Cardbo" doll we mentioned a few weeks ago? Well, click here to see how to turn it into this:

I want one.

In other Kiyohiko Azuma news, Yotsuba&! volume six is due out in late February, Revoltech has released their new-and-improved Yotsuba figurine (Behold! It comes with two heads, extra hands, a squirt gun, and an ice cream bar!), and I think I'm making progress on my quest to buy an Osaka screensaver.
