Romance Writing 101
Aspiring romance novelists take note: Harlequin is kicking off their second " So You Think You Can Write" contest this week. (Actually, I suspect this event would benefit more than just budding romance novelists. Harlequin is also offering a ton of "interactive assignments" that sound like they would help any would-be writer, regardless of genre.) Labels: contests, Harlequin

Not bad, not bad at all.
Susan Elizabeth Phillips is apparently planning on giving away several advance-reader copies of her upcoming book Call Me Irresistible over the next few months, so if you're a fan of hers you might want to start monitoring her Contest Page. Actually, you might want to start monitoring her contest page even if you aren't a fan. That woman is generous with her contests: this month's offering includes both a signed ARC copy of Call me Irresistible and a $50 gift certificate to the winner's bookstore of choice. Behind the times
How did I miss this? The 2010 Bulwer-Lytton contest results were released late last month, and this year's winner is (as they always are) a delight: For the first month of Ricardo and Felicity's affair, they greeted one another at every stolen rendezvous with a kiss--a lengthy, ravenous kiss, Ricardo lapping and sucking at Felicity's mouth as if she were a giant cage-mounted water bottle and he were the world's thirstiest gerbil.
-Composed by Molly Ringle, of Seattle, WA I'm also really enjoying the Bulwer-Lytton people's newest game, which involves celebrating bad sentences found in real, published books. My favorite? "The possessiveness in his voice was deep and strong, its triumphant throb cutting through the layers of sexual delight as thoroughly as a knife through warm butter, and it hit her like a deluge of cold water." Apparently, this comes from a book by someone named Helen Brooks called Husband by Contract. Now, for all I know, the rest of this book is fine... but that sentence? That sentence is a treasure. Manga for the rich and famous
Huh. If you're artistically inclined, this might be worth investigating: according to AnimeNewsNetwork, the Italian fashion label Prada has announced a Manga-themed contest in celebration of its new "Swing" collection of 1950s-inspired sunglasses. (Which are, by the way, super cute.) According to their site, participants must create a comic storyboard featuring a "fantasy heroine" decked out in said eyewear and submit the storyboard by August 31st. The winner will receive 5,000 euros. You can check out the details on the official Prada website, under the "Projects" section. Good luck! Labels: Art, contests, manga

Teachers/parents/etc. take note...
I'm not sure if this contest will be of personal interest to our normal demographic, but it sounded too good to ignore: Random House Books and the Kids Crooked House Company have put together an essay contest inspired by Mary Pope Osborne's massively successful Magic Tree House series. Kids interested in entering must submit a response to this question: Write about an adventure you would like to have in the Magic Tree House. Where would you go and what would you do? The grand-prize winner will be awarded their own "Magic Tree House" (a custom-designed playhouse by Kids Crooked House) and 10 runner-ups will receive an autographed copy of one of Osborne's books. Mary Pope Osborne will review the submissions and choose the winner. Entry forms can be downloaded from MagicTreeHouse.com and will be accepted until October 31st, 2010. The winners will be announced in mid-December. Good luck! Labels: contests, Kids' books, Series

Contest news...
Flat broke, but still in the market for a Mother's Day gift? Check out Bookreporter.com's Mother's Day Contest. In addition to a variety of Mom-inspired reading material, they're also giving away 15 swanky-looking gift baskets. Their book choices are hit-or-miss (I'm sorry, but it will be a cold day in hell before I celebrate *my* mother with anything written by Dr. Laura), but the baskets themselves would make a lovely gift.
