Anita Blake: the movie?!
Cable network IFC is working with Lionsgate to produce a TV movie based on the Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter books. It is the network's first theatrical-length movie production, it will be aimed at men ages 18-34, and they're planning to air it next year. Wow. Just... wow. It's being aimed at men? The producers are making comparisons to True Blood and Buffy? Has anybody at IFC actually read these books—at least, the most recent ones? Because I don't think they are all that suitable for cable. Not even late-night cable. Labels: Laurell K. Hamilton, Movie Adaptations

Guilty Pleasures
Check 'em out! The long-awaited Anita Blake comic book was released this week. While I could not bring myself to actually go out and spend my hard-earned money on one, I was able to find some sample pages on the web to share. Check out Jean-Claude! Oh, my God--I could not stop giggling.... *All images are property of their respective artists and publishers. They are also funny as hell. Labels: Anita Blake, Comic, Laurell K. Hamilton

Back in the day...
Hey, remember this, Laurell? Back when you couldn't afford the truly classy cover art featured on your books now? When your budget was more Subspecies than Anne Rice? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA Okay... you need to have read the more recent installments of this series to understand why I'm dying here, but those of you that have--doesn't it just totally brighten up your Sunday? Long weekend = lots of reading time!
Whether you are heading off on vacation or just hanging by the pool this four-day weekend, here are a few new book suggestions to check out. Jennifer Colt - The Mangler of Malibu CanyonIf you haven't gotten a chance to check out Jennifer Colt's books yet, then this is a perfect weekend to grab The Butcher of Beverly Hills and The Mangler of Malibu Canyon and settle down for a great time. I haven't had a chance to read the second book (since someone--JULIA--is hoarding the ARC copy), but I plan to pick it up when I get paid Friday. I'm excited to see what the twins get themselves into this time! Check out the first chapter... Janet Evanovich - Twelve SharpIt's always a good month when we get a new Stephanie Plum novel, and Twelve Sharp is completely worth the price of the hardback edition. It is full of crazy skips, insane outfits, Grandma Mazur in rare form, Lula, and lots and lots of Ranger-y goodness. (Mmm, Ranger....) Check out the first chapter... Carrie Vaughn - Kitty Goes to WashingtonThe next installment of Kitty's adventures is coming out just in time for the holiday weekend. After barely escaping Denver skin-intact, Kitty Norville takes her radio show on the road, and ends up in our nation's capital. This promises to be a fun read. In related news, Ms. Vaughn will be producing at least two more books about Kitty: she's finished Kitty takes a Holiday, and is starting on Kitty and the Silver Bullet. They'll be available in early and late 2007, if all goes according to plan. Check out the first chapter... Laurell K. Hamilton - Danse MacabreAnd for those of you who are not faint of heart, there is also the the new Anita Blake novel. Since the pain from her last book Micah hasn't really healed (Julia is still really bitter--you should hear her bitch), no one here at Wordcandy bothered to request an ARC (and none of us are remotely willing to pay for it in hardcover). Maybe when it comes out in paperback we'll pick it up, but until then we would love to hear what you guys think of it! Check out the first few chapters...Labels: excerpt, Janet Evanovich, Jennifer Colt, Kelly Armstrong, Laurell K. Hamilton

Beware!
In addition to the oh-so-exciting new book of Laurell K. Hamilton short stories that Julia mentioned yesterday, there is also going to be a re-issue of one of her older books: Death of a Darklord: The Ravenloft Covenant. Consider yourself warned: this story looks just as bad as its cover art--which might even worse than the Micah cover. Read at your own risk!!!Labels: Book Cover, Laurell K. Hamilton

When "Man, is that tacky" is not enough...
"She keeps all her goods in the shop-window" is such a deliciously nasty old-fashioned saying. Don't you think it describes this book cover perfectly? Yes, gentle readers, there's another Laurell K. Hamilton atrocity coming down the pike. The short story collection Strange Candy will be released in October. So let's take a look at this particular shop window, shall we? There's a woman in vaguely bondage-y looking clothes, holding up a cherry that's dripping some red fluid. Gee, that imagery is awfully subtle, but I'm gonna go out on a limb and make some predictions: A) this book is about sex, B) the sex will be oh-so-kinky, and C) the entire mess is going to be a tacky, silly, cobbled-together mishmash of Hamilton's increasingly boring favorite themes. Excuse me...
...while I laugh my ass off. Behold! The Anita Blake comic book, coming soon: Apparently Laurell K. Hamilton really likes this artwork. Not that that's much of a shocker- Anita, as anyone who's seen a publicity photo of Hamilton knows, is Hamilton's alter-ego. And it does not comes as a surprise that Laurell K. Hamilton's vision of herself- as a fiery, dark-haired, ass-kicking and name-taking hellcat, tinged with just a wee hint of wistful femininity- is exactly the kind of thing that translates beautifully into cheeseball comic book artwork. A Public Service Announcement
Do not buy this book, because it SUCKS: Even though my hopes weren't high (thanks to how craptastic Ms. Hamilton's last few novels have been), I was shocked by how bad this book was. It's essentially one long sex-and-whining scene, capped off by a particularly stupid "Anita Does Something Mystical That Even She Does Not Understand" final chapter. Doesn't Hamilton ever get bored with writing this crap? Remember how cool the first few Anita Blake books were? Remember how much fun it was to read Hamilton's blend of erotica and wry comments on the insurance practices of the undead? (Or, in the case of the Merry Gentry books, her blend of erotica and all of that awesome stuff about Unseelie court machinations.) Apparently Hamilton has completely given up that kind of thing in favor of blow-by-blow (sorry) descriptions of her kinkiest sex fantasies. Sure, Micah is the kind of book that might qualify as pure erotica... if it wasn't so excruciatingly boring. Note: If you, too, are depressed by Laurell K. Hamilton's ever-lowering standards, go check out LKH_lashouts, a livejournal community devoted to Hamilton-related venting. Labels: Laurell K. Hamilton
