New series from Kelley Armstrong

It seems that Kelley Armstrong, the author of the much-loved Otherworld books, has a new series in the works. Unlike her current series, which has a strong paranormal/suspense element, this new series will be straight-up crime-fighting. The first title in the series is Exit Strategy, and its heroine is an ex-cop turned hitwoman named Nadia Stafford:

"Law enforcement is in Nadia Stafford's blood. She comes from a long line of police officers, and was one herself until the wrong case sent her over the line from cop to killer. Now, to keep her beloved wilderness lodge afloat, she's a contract killer for a small Mafia family.

When a serial killer with all the earmarks of a hit-man begins murdering innocent people, the police investigation threatens to unmask Nadia and others, and she bands together with a small group of hitmen, including her mentor—the mysterious Jack. But once the killer realizes who's on his trail, his simple plan twists into a complex game as both sides fight to prove who is the hunter...and who the prey."

This looks like a lot of fun, and is definitely going to make it onto my list of summer books that I'm really looking forward to reading. The first three chapters are up on Ms. Armstrong's website and are well worth the visit.

Long weekend = lots of reading time!

Whether you are heading off on vacation or just hanging by the pool this four-day weekend, here are a few new book suggestions to check out.

Jennifer Colt - The Mangler of Malibu Canyon
If you haven't gotten a chance to check out Jennifer Colt's books yet, then this is a perfect weekend to grab The Butcher of Beverly Hills and The Mangler of Malibu Canyon and settle down for a great time. I haven't had a chance to read the second book (since someone--JULIA--is hoarding the ARC copy), but I plan to pick it up when I get paid Friday. I'm excited to see what the twins get themselves into this time!

Check out the first chapter...

Janet Evanovich - Twelve Sharp
It's always a good month when we get a new Stephanie Plum novel, and Twelve Sharp is completely worth the price of the hardback edition. It is full of crazy skips, insane outfits, Grandma Mazur in rare form, Lula, and lots and lots of Ranger-y goodness. (Mmm, Ranger....)

Check out the first chapter...

Carrie Vaughn - Kitty Goes to Washington
The next installment of Kitty's adventures is coming out just in time for the holiday weekend. After barely escaping Denver skin-intact, Kitty Norville takes her radio show on the road, and ends up in our nation's capital. This promises to be a fun read. In related news, Ms. Vaughn will be producing at least two more books about Kitty: she's finished Kitty takes a Holiday, and is starting on Kitty and the Silver Bullet. They'll be available in early and late 2007, if all goes according to plan.

Check out the first chapter...

Laurell K. Hamilton - Danse Macabre
And for those of you who are not faint of heart, there is also the the new Anita Blake novel. Since the pain from her last book Micah hasn't really healed (Julia is still really bitter--you should hear her bitch), no one here at Wordcandy bothered to request an ARC (and none of us are remotely willing to pay for it in hardcover). Maybe when it comes out in paperback we'll pick it up, but until then we would love to hear what you guys think of it!

Check out the first few chapters...

More Kelly Armstrong!

Broken, Ms. Armstrong's newest book in the Otherworld series, was released last week. (I picked the book up over the weekend, but I haven't had a chance to start reading it yet--I spent the weekend making shirts from the DIY T-shirt book I mentioned last month. So much fun, seriously!)

I am really excited about the book, but I'm already bummed about the loooong wait we're going to have for the next one--it won't be released until the spring of 2007. If you too are sad about this, here's a few tidbits to ease the pain: we already know that the next book will focus on Jaime Vegas, and you can check out an except from the book on Ms. Armstrong's website. Enjoy!
