Read, burn calories, and shop, all at the same time!
I think this is so cool: Washington's King County Library System is offering a series of " Book Cover Walking Tours". The tours turn eight Seattle-adjacent communities into outdoor galleries for book cover art. Each stop features a book cover displayed in a local business as well as a phone number than participants can dial to hear pre-recorded info about the title. The tours run through May. Middle Earth: the theme park?
According to Cinematical, there are rumors that Universal Studios is toying with the idea of making a Lord of the Rings theme park (presumably thanks to the success of its Wizarding World of Harry Potter attraction). I'm assuming this will be tied in to the release of the long-awaited adaptation of The Hobbit, which I understand will be split into two parts, directed by Peter Jackson, and released in 2012 and 2013. Out and about
The AP Wire recently posted a story about a dude named Walter Skold, an amateur poet and the founder of the Dead Poets Society of America. (Their tagline: "We dig dead poets... you dig?") Mr. Skold has just finished a three-month road trip during which he visited the graves of 150 poets in 23 states, traveling in his "Poemobile" cargo van. He spent the three months visiting and documenting the graves of the dead poets--some well-known, some totally obscure--and celebrating their works through readings, tombstone-decorating, and the odd bit of performance art. Mr. Skold is making a documentary about his trip, and hopes to search for dead American poets buried in Europe next year. Labels: poetry, Travel

Reason number #327 I want to go to Beijing...
...would be this bookstore. Sadly, I suspect I'm a mite too tall to fit in. Also, I don't speak Chinese. Oh, and I'm 30 years old. But I'd still go. Labels: Bookstores, Travel

Rick Steves goes hardcore.
Heh. Okay, not really. Anyway, Salon has a fascinating interview up with the travel writer, who shares his feelings on Iran, ugly American stereotypes, and the decriminalization of marijuana. It makes for a great read, and shows a different (read: way more political) side of Steves than I think most people give him credit for. Whether you agree with him or not, he comes across really well... ...except for one throwaway line about his wife gaining a few pounds on a beach in Mazatlán, which I suspect he might live to regret. At least, he would if he was my spouse. Labels: Nonfiction, Travel

Traveling this summer?
I received this book a few years ago from Julia, right before I headed off to Italy for a few weeks. Italy is the kind of place where you can usually get by without knowing much of the language, but this book was still invaluable and others in my group kept borrowing it during the trip. The book is done with photos instead of drawings, unlike like many similar books. It includes pictures of everything from sanitary fixtures to drinks to transportation or housing options. If you want a hotel room with a single bed and a private bathroom, you just point to those options. If you want a steak, you can point to the appropriate section of cow. Plus, this book is tiny--you can easily slip it into your pocket. It's the perfect size for carry-on! This is a must-have for any international trip and it would make a great graduation gift--maybe with a cool carry-on bag? Labels: Nonfiction, Shopping, Travel
