Somehow I missed the fact that Brendan Fraser is going to be starring in the adaption of Jules Verne's novel Journey to the Center of the Earth. I really thought we'd seen the end of his career after the second Mummy movie, but (sadly) that is not the case. Just looking at the trailer tells me that this movie is going to going to be one of those really loose adaptations, so literary purists might want to keep that in mind. But the best part is that in select theaters you can go and watch it in 3D!
P.S. And now I'm told that there is actually going to be a third movie in the Mummy series: The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
I thought I would post the latest trailer for Prince Caspian: The Return to Narnia (the movie adaptation of the second book in the Chronicles of Narnia series), just in case you missed it during the Super Bowl:
I totally encourage everybody to check out the trailer for the upcoming "digitally-enhanced live action" movie adaptation of Beowulf--it had me giggling for hours. Literary purists might be a little taken aback by this effort to turn one of history's greatest epic poems into a Final Fantasy-style cheesefest, but what do they know? C'mon--this thing is rumored to be released in 3-D!
Although... is anybody else taken aback by natural Angelina Jolie looks as a CGI character?
Note: Wordcandy author Neil Gaiman co-wrote the screenplay for this sucker.
For once, a trend we can encourage: making movie or tv adaptations of books that we haven't read and don't give a damn about.
Example number one:
Gossip Girl
The only reason we're even remotely interested in this soaptastic TV series, based on those cheesy-looking YA books, is that it's going to be narrated by Kristen Bell, star of the late, lamented Veronica Mars. Hopefully she didn't sign on just because she needed to pay the rent....
And example number two:
The Spiderwick Chronicles
We're only on nodding terms with this fantasy series, but the movie adaptation appears to have two things going for it: A) the series it's based on is co-authored by Wordcandy author Holly Black, and B) the film stars that surprisingly non-obnoxious kid from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
The trailer for the upcoming film adaptation of Karen Joy Fowler's The Jane Austen Book Club is now available on the web.
I was underwhelmed by this book (although I know and respect several people that loved it), and I think I'll skip the movie. The trailer features a lot of people that look good on camera, but I don't see anything particularly Austen-esque about it. Frankly, between this genteel potboiler, the ridiculous Becoming Jane "biopic", and those three dopey TV adaptations of Mansfield Park, Persuasion, and Northanger Abbey, 2007 has been rough on Miss Austen's books.
Interested parties can now download the high-definition trailer for the upcoming The Golden Compass movie. While all the human actors look great--I can't believe how slinky Nicole Kidman looks--the trailer is still a little dorky. I'm sorry, tech geeks, but CGI continues to look totally fake, and I can't stand the trailer intro, which loudly reminds us that this movie is from the same people who brought the Lord of the Rings series to the big screen. Also, why are there so few shots of the daemons? Was the crappy CGI not ready in time for the trailer release?
None of this, of course, means that I won't be there to see this movie on opening night.
Here is another sneak peak of what to expect this summer from the next Harry Potter movie, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. Now if we could just get a sample chapter from the final book... (yeah, I won't be holding my breath on that one).
Updated:: You can see the US High-Definition trailer (which looks like it might be a little different from the one above) here.
The trailer is out for the new Nancy Drew movie and I have to say: I am not sure that I'm going to enjoy this film. Maybe it is all of the Veronica Mars I've been watching for the past few years, but I just can't see Emma Roberts as Nancy.
Well... it isn't the full trailer, but it's almost ten seconds' worth of Harry Potter goodness that you don't need to buy tickets to Happy Feet to experience. Click here to enjoy!
The HD trailer is now up for the big holiday blockbuster-to-be Eragon. I am still not really sure how I feel about this film adaptation, but so far the trailers have been working for me.
