Philip Pullman continues to milk the His Dark Materials cash cow.
Here's the cover art for Philip Pullman's upcoming Once Upon a Time in the North: Very... dignified-looking. Once Upon a Time in the North is a prequel to the His Dark Materials trilogy, and focuses on the meeting of Iorek Byrnison and Lee Scoresby. It's due out in April. Pullman is apparently planning one more book (a green one), which will feature Will. Labels: Philip Pullman, Upcoming Books

See the bear dance...
Interested parties can now download the high-definition trailer for the upcoming The Golden Compass movie. While all the human actors look great--I can't believe how slinky Nicole Kidman looks--the trailer is still a little dorky. I'm sorry, tech geeks, but CGI continues to look totally fake, and I can't stand the trailer intro, which loudly reminds us that this movie is from the same people who brought the Lord of the Rings series to the big screen. Also, why are there so few shots of the daemons? Was the crappy CGI not ready in time for the trailer release? None of this, of course, means that I won't be there to see this movie on opening night. Spin the wheel
New Line's website for their Golden Compass movie adaptation is up and running, and allows fans to play a twenty questions-style game that determines what their deamon would be. (It's kinda fun--mine was an ocelot named Gabriel.) Labels: Movie, Philip Pullman, website

Further Pullman movie action
Masterpiece Theater has made a film adaptation of Phillip Pullman's The Ruby in the Smoke. It debuted last night, but chances are good you can catch it on repeats. The Ruby in the Smoke is not my favorite Pullman novel, but this adaptation looks like a fun little Victorian noir. Labels: Philip Pullman

Aardman!
Much to my delight, I hear that Aardman Studios (the people who made Wallace and Gromit and Chicken Run) will be making a film adaptation of Philip Pullman's The Scarecrow and his Servant. I've been mistaken before, sadly--I thought that the Miyazaki adaptation of Diana Wynne Jones's Howl's Moving Castle would be brilliant, but it turned out to be merely good--but my hopes are high for this collaboration. Wordcandy casting news
Bond girl Eva Green has been cast as Serafina Pekula and Nicole Kidman has been cast as Ms. Coulter in the upcoming Golden Compass movie adaptation; Helena Bonham Carter has been cast as Bellatrix Lestrange in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. (Seriously, even setting aside her E.M. Forster roles, that woman has been in a lot of Wordcandy- based movies.) <---Apparently, this is the Wordcandy pin-up girl. Who knew? "The Golden Compass" news, part two
So, here's what the Imdb had to say about the new The Golden Compass film adaptation: -Writer Philip Pullman wants Nicole Kidman to play Mrs. Coulter and has indicated that he would like Jason Isaacs to portray Lord Asriel. He has also indicated that he would like the part of Lee Scorsby to be played by Samuel L. Jackson
-Anand Tucker was announced to be the director of this film in August 2005. He started pre-production work on the film and filming was set to start later in 2006. However in May 2006 he suddenly pulled out citing differences with the studio and American Pie (1999) director Chris Weitz was announced as his replacement
-Screenwriter Tom Stoppard wrote various drafts of the screenplay adaptation of this film. When director Chris Weitz became involved he also assumed the role of screenwriter
Nicole Kidman? Awesome! Jason Isaacs? Also awesome! Samuel L. Jackson? Even awesomer! But Chris Weitz? Chris Weitz? Excuse me. I'll be weeping in the corner. [ Source] Labels: Hollywood, Movie, Philip Pullman

*cue fangirl-ish squee-ing*
THEY'RE GONNA START FILMING THE HIS DARK MATERIALS TRILOGY IN SEPTEMBER!!!!! Actually, I'm really nervous about this one. Dollars to donuts, it'll end up being a The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe-style special-effects extravaganza, where they spend the biiiiiig bucks on the computer animation and skimp on stuff like, oh, a decent script. Still: SEPTEMBER!!!!! [ Source] Labels: Movie, Philip Pullman
