Why so far away, May 8th?
At long, long, long last, the book cover and plot description for the final (*sobs*) Sisters Grimm book are out:  "In the final volume in the Sisters Grimm series, Sabrina, Daphne, and the rest of the Grimms and their friends must face off against the Master to decide the fate of Ferryport Landing—and the world. When Mirror fails to escape the barrier using Granny Relda’s body, he turns to his plan B: killing all the Grimms so that the magical barrier collapses. In the meantime, Sabrina has gathered the other magic mirrors as advisors on how to deal with their mortal enemy. They tell her to join forces with the Scarlet Hand against Mirror, in exchange for offering all the citizens of Ferryport Landing their freedom. Michael Buckley has gone AWOL
 The last several times I've checked Amazon for news of the ninth and final Sisters Grimm book, the only thing that's turned up has been a book about Capital Tax Acts. I've managed to remain calm, because books occasionally fail to turn up until shortly before their publication dates, and Michael Buckley has been pretty consistent about publishing in the spring... until now. (The horror!) Amazon's Michael Buckley listing has finally been updated, but with the publication date for Nerds #3: The Cheerleaders of Doom, which isn't out until September. Michael Buckley for an older crowd
 I caught an episode of Robotomy over the weekend, and while this series was co-created by best-selling children's author Michael Buckley and appears on Cartoon Network, do not assume it is safe for work. The Sisters Grimm: The Inside Story, by Michael Buckley
 Once again, Michael Buckley's newest Sisters Grimm book is scheduled to go on sale May 1st, and once again, it was widely available by mid-April. I asked about this (again), and the bookseller told me (again) that it wasn't actually out, but he was okay to sell it. Yeah, I don't get it either. But the point of this story is: don't buy this sucker online, because you can get it weeks earlier in brick-and-mortar stores. The Inside Story picks up immediately after the final scene of The Everafter War. Sabrina, Daphne, and Puck are stuck in the "Book of Everafter", where they're forced to chase the Master through a series of stories peopled by Everafter characters anxious to change their destinies. (Spending eternity getting your house blown down by a wolf or having water thrown on you by a snot-nosed kid from Kansas gets old.) Unfortunately, every alteration they make further angers the Editor, the guardian of the Book, whose army of Revisers eats anyone who screws with the established order.... The Sisters Grimm: The Inside Story features plenty of action and humor, along with a healthy dollop of Puck/Sabrina romance. There wasn't much concrete plot development (Daphne and Sabrina's parents are barely present, for example), and the climactic battle scene was cluttered and hard to follow. However, we don't love these books for their action sequences; we love 'em for their charm and humor and squee-inducing Puck and Sabrina spats, and this installment delivered those in spades. We noticed that the final line of The Inside Story was "To Be Concluded...", which seems to indicate that the ninth book will be the end of this series—sad news, as we were hoping for a tenth. (Well, *I* was hoping for a tenth. Meg wants to read about Puck and Sabrina's dating adventures straight through high school. And maybe beyond.) Still, The Sisters Grimm has had a great run, and I'll be haunting bookstores starting in mid-April next year, looking for Buckley's next May 1st release. Labels: Book Reviews, Michael Buckley

Coming Soon
The book cover and publisher's description for The Inside Story, the eighth Sisters Grimm book, are out. Behold:  "After the shocking ending of The Everafter War, this book picks up with Sabrina, Daphne, and Puck stuck in the Book of Everafter, where all the fairy tales are stored and enchanted characters can change their destinies. The girls (and Puck) must chase the Master through a series of stories, where they’re willing to change what they need in order to save their baby brother. Soon, however, they are confronted by the Editor—the book’s guardian—who, along with an army of tiny monsters known as Revisers, threatens the children with dire consequences if they don’t stick to the stories. As they chase their quarry and dodge the Revisers, they meet Alice, Mowgli, Jack the Giant Killer, Hansel and Gretel, the Headless Horseman, and more. But will they find their brother in time?" This puppy is officially out at the beginning of May, but the local Borders store always seems to have their copies on the shelves at least two weeks early, so I'll be keeping an eye out for it by early April. How did I miss this?
Sisters Grimm author Michael Buckley has a new series coming out soon, and by "soon" I mean ON TUESDAY!!! I'm not sure how this slid past my radar, but check it out:  Admittedly, Amazon has Buckley listed as a "contributor", and the illustrator dude listed as author, but I have often wondered if Amazon employees do all of their data entry while drunk out of their gourds. The Sisters Grimm
 So, if you swing by Michael Buckley's site, you can read an excerpt from The Everafter War, the upcoming seventh book in his Sisters Grimm series. But be warned: there's just enough there to tantalize the crap out of you, and that's it. I'm kind of sorry I read it, actually. I'd do it again in a heartbeat (because I have no self control), but I'm left feeling like the release date* is about ten years away. *It's scheduled for May 1st, but I find that the people at Borders always seem to put out the books in this series a few days early, so maybe I'll get lucky. Sisters Grimm #6: Tales from the Hood
(Have I mentioned how much I hate the whole Daylight Savings spring time change? Because, seriously: my brain feels like it's going to melt.) I can't believe this slipped past me, but Michael Buckley's sixth Sisters Grimm book is almost out. Tales from the Hood will be released on May 2nd, and Amulet has already posted the cover art and synopsis:  "The Grimms defend Mr. Canis in Ferryport Landing’s trial of the century!
This book sees Mr. Canis, dear friend and protector of the Grimm family, put on trial for past crimes. Considering that he’s really the Big Bad Wolf, he has a lot to answer for. Is there any truth to the story told by Little Red Riding Hood? What’s the deal with all that huffing and puffing? Will Mr. Canis be forced to answer for his crimes?
A kangaroo court of Everafters, led by the cruel Queen of Hearts, is determined to find Canis guilty and force the Grimms out of Ferryport Landing. Meanwhile, Puck has decided to focus more on his mischievous ways, making a few new troublemaker friends. YA fantasy fans rejoice!
 The publishing industry's spring catalogs are beginning to trickle in, and there is some seriously good stuff coming down the pike, dear readers. Just out: Perennial Wordcandy favorite Michael Buckley has just released the fifth book in his Sisters Grimm series, Magic and Other Misdemeanors. It is, as always, AWESOME. Coming soon: There's going to be a sequel to Catherine Jinks's creepy-yet-entertaining Evil Genius. Expect Genius Squad in May. Coming soon-ish: And it turns out that there will be a sequel to Ysabeau S. Wilce's deliciously strange Flora Segunda. Peter Ferguson brings the pretty.
The cover art is now available for Magic and Other Misdemeanors, the fifth book in Michael Buckley's Sisters Grimm series, and illustrator Peter Ferguson continues to knock our socks off:  This series is, bar none, the most elegant set of kids' books I've ever laid eyes on, and Buckley's smart, goofy series is totally worthy of its packaging. Also pretty!
 I have long admired the cover art for Michael Buckley's Sisters Grimm series. They're truly beautiful books, with packaging that confidently asserts: "Yes, these books are going to be instant classics." But beauty costs money, and Buckley's publishers were understandably reluctant to produce a paperback version of the books until they'd milked every drop of available cash from their hardcover cow. Happily for cash-strapped young readers everywhere, that has finally happened: paperback versions of Buckley's first two books will be available in April, and I'm happy to report that they're A) almost as gorgeous as the hardcover versions, and B) a mere $5.95. In this scene...Our heroines, Sabrina and Daphne Grimm, are sneaking through their on-again, off-again friend Puck's magical, forest-themed bedroom. Puck has been the Trickster King for centuries, and his bedroom decor reflects that—it's a dangerous place to wander about in, as the Grimm sisters realized on a previous visit. (They took a wrong step and were catapulted into a vat of pickle-scented glue.) This time, they're determined to find Puck without mishap.  The girls crept along the path around the lagoon and then into some heavy brush. Eventually they came to a trampoline on which Puck was sound asleep. The Trickster King was wearing a pair of blue footie pajamas that had little smiling stars and moons on them. Held close to his face was a soft pink stuffed unicorn with a rainbow sewn on its side. If only Sabrina had brought a camera, she could have also recorded his thumb in his mouth.
"Time to wake up the sleepy monkey," Sabrina cooed in baby talk, trying her best not to roar with laughter.
Daphne giggled but held her hand over her mouth.
"Wakie-wakie, eggs and bac-ie," Sabrina continued.
Puck stirred in his sleep but didn't wake. A big stream of drool escaped his mouth and ran down the front of his pajamas.
"Does someone have the sleepy-sleepies?" Daphne said mimicking her sister's baby talk.
"Time to come back from dreamland, precious," the older girl said, shaking the boy roughly. Puck sprang from his sleep, with wings extended from his back. He waved his big pink unicorn like a deadly sword and slashed at the children.
"Nice jammies," Daphne snickered.
"I especially like Mr. Unicorn," Sabrina laughed.
