Breaking records

According to Publishers Weekly, Brisingr, the third volume in Christopher Paolini's "Inheritance Cycle", sold 550,000 copies on its first day. The sales numbers broke records for Random House Children's Books, and more than 2,500 bookstores held midnight release parties for Brisingr on September 20th.

I noticed my local grocery store—obviously unaware that this book was supposed to be a Very Big Deal—had their copies out on the shelf by Friday evening. (They did the same thing with Stephenie Meyer's Breaking Dawn a few weeks ago.) Clearly, if you just can't wait another second to read a best-selling kid novel, check out the book section of your local supermarket. If the book isn't Harry Potter famous, chances are good they'll take the publisher's release date as a suggestion, rather than a hard-and-fast rule, and you might be able to get your greedy little hands on it a few hours early.

Megan’s Bookshelf Update

I am way behind on my reading- the huge pile of books on my night stand is threatening to topple over and bury me in my sleep. I keep promising myself that I'll get started once the election insanity is over this week, but we'll see. Anyway, here are a few of the titles I can remember from the stack beside my bed.

Solomon vs. Lord by Paul Levine
This is the only book I've actually started- I'm about 30 pages in and loving it! It is a funny, sexy courtroom drama with a great mismatched pair of lawyers. Steve Solomon, a ambulance-casing lawyer, pairs up with Victoria Lord, a high society Yale Law grad, to defend Katrina Barksdale, a tennis buddy of Victoria’s who is being tried for the murder of her much older husband... who died during a romp in bed that got out of hand. If the first 30 pages are any indication, this is going to be a great read.

Christie Ridgway
While stranded in the JFK airport a few months ago I ran across "An Offer He Can't Refuse " by Christie Ridgway. I picked this title up because it had one of those quotes about how much Jenny Cruise loved the book. Since Crusie is one of my favorite authors, I figured it couldn't go too wrong. Anyway, I absolutely loved the book and am planning on writing an author review for Ridgway as soon as I get the chance- meanwhile I picked up a few of her older books from my local used bookstore and I can’t wait to dive in. Ms. Ridgway is definitely worth checking out!

Eldest by Christopher Paolini
I have been holding on to this book since the week it came out in August. I was really excited about the book and the reviews I have read have been good... but I just can’t seem to start reading it. This is the second book in Christopher’s trilogy about the dragon rider Eragon and his dragon Saphira. Eh... I tend to be more the in the mood to start epic-type books when it is all cold and wintery, and it's currently a lovely 70 degrees here in Ohio. But once the snow hits I am all over this book!

See? And that just touches the top of the pile that is looming over my bedside. I'll have to dig a little deeper into the mountain for next week's bookshelf update. I should be back tomorrow with some rumors about what some of our favorite Wordcandy authors are working on for the new year.
