Silk purse/sow's ear

I was poking around the bookstore over the weekend, and I ran across this:

Now, I'm not an Ayn Rand fan, but I am a fan of great cover art, and that is some really, truly great cover art. I love the muted colors and the strong shapes and the whole vintage vibe. I'd almost buy it based on the cover alone, but it costs $39.95, which is pure, unadulterated craziness. Seriously, who would spend forty bucks for an Ayn Rand novel, particularly one you could find in any used bookstore for two dollars or less?

But you are missing the point! Genuine vintage, the real old stuff, is garbage that no one wants. Fake vintage, new stuff made up to look old and then marked with a crazy-high price, now that is is the good stuff.

Yeah.

I couldn't believe somebody had put that much money into that particular book in the first place! Are there really enough Fox News fans out there looking for a 'Family Bible'-style copy of Atlas Shrugged to justify a massive print run of a $40-plus book? Or is my particular area just lucky?
