Living up to the hype

The Wall Street Journal has posted an article about the marketing hoopla surrounding never-before-published author Erin Morgenstern's upcoming novel The Night Circus. Once again, everyone involved is really, really, really hoping this book will be the "next Harry Potter".

I seriously doubt Ms. Morgenstern's novel will achieve anything close to the near-universal popularity of J.K. Rowling's series, but it has a gorgeous cover and it's getting a boatload of press, which might be enough to offset the fact that it's a standalone, not a series, and will be shelved in the general fiction section, rather than with the YA or children's books. The combination of great press and an eye-catching cover certainly generated plenty of sales for Susanna Clarke's Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell (another title surrounded by "next Harry Potter" hype), but I've always suspected that way more people bought that book than actually finished it.

Bargain hunters take heed

Barnes and Noble currently has a lovely boxed set of Susanna Clarke's Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell available for $3.99. The book has been broken down into three volumes (each bound in a different color: cranberry, black, and white), and originally cost a whopping $26, so this is quite the deal.

Wordcandy particularly loves her short stories.

Just a reminder, Clarke fans: you can read one of the short stories found in The Ladies of Grace Adieu here. It's called The Duke of Wellington Misplaces His Horse, and it originally appeared on Neil Gaiman's website.

Wordcandy loves Susanna Clarke

Susanna Clarke's new book, The Ladies of Grace Adieu, is due out on October 17th. Apparently, it will be a collection of short stories set in the world of her first book, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell, but featuring various historical figures (with appearances from some of her own characters). I love the cover art, I love the idea, I'm mega-excited about the book... but I have a few concerns. First, of the eight stories in the book, seven have already been published, but the book is still twenty-four dollars! For the sake of hardcore Clarke fans, I hope that the one original story is pretty damn impressive. Second, are we going to need to re-read Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell to understand this book? If that's the case, better start reading now, gentle readers. You've only got a few months.

Wordcandy loves the mass-market paperbacks

I realize that for many people, Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell was a daunting proposition. After all, the book was A) approximately one million pages long, B) close to thirty dollars, and C) awfully, well, wordy. So I'm very happy to report that it's now out in a mass-market paperback edition. Sure, A and C still hold true, but now you can buy it for a mere eight dollars*!

*Unfortunately, you get what you pay for, so this probably means that the last hundred pages or so will fall out of the crappy glued binding before you get around to finishing the book.
