RIP, OneManga
It is with mixed emotions (about 55% irritation, 45% resignation) that I say goodbye to OneManga, the popular manga scanlation site that shut down for good last week. Now, it's possible that the folks at OM will eventually restore the unlicensed scanlations they hosted (their FAQ section is unclear on this point), but for now the reading portion of the site is dead. Wordcandy hosts two scanlated series— Banhonsa and Absolute Witch, both wonderful, funny stories that have yet to find a publisher in the United States. When/if that happens, we will immediately take down the scanlations and pray for them to become rip-roaring successes. However, I can't help but sympathize with people who rely on scanlations for all their manga needs. There are just too many problems with the American manga market: the prices are high, series can be dropped at any point, it can be tough-to-impossible to find back volumes, etc. I understand the flip sides to these arguments, too... but there's no denying that free, easy-to-use scanlation sites like OneManga will be sincerely missed. New Absolute Witch
Huh. How did we miss the second part of Absolute Witch chapter seven? I mean, it's been out since December, and I even helped with the quality check. Seriously, how absent-minded can I be? Anyway, both the second and third parts of chapter seven are now up on our scanlations page. Enjoy! Labels: Scanlations, Wordcandy main site

Manhwa mourning
Christopher from the blog comics212 has posted a discouraging response to a Publishers Weekly interview with Tokyopop marketing director Marco Pavia. Christopher seems unconvinced by Pavia's claims (that Tokyopop has not issued an official cancellation list, and that many of the titles rumored to be cancelled will be published eventually), and has made a list of every title originally scheduled as a Fall 2008 Tokyopop release that will not be released this fall, and and two-- two!-- #Korean-manhwa titles are on it: the first volume of Ciel and I Wish volume three. This really brings up all of my mixed feelings about scanlation--I mean, I already knew that I Wish was on the chopping block, but the Ciel cancellation is news. #K-M is a responsible group, and we'd stop scanlating in a heartbeat if we knew a series was going to be made available by a real publisher. However, it's tough to hear that a series we've worked hard on, and introduced to many readers, is now stuck in publishing limbo.... Labels: Scanlations

Scanlations for the people
As many of you know, we host scanlated versions of two Korean manhwa series on the main site: Banhonsa: The Spirit Returner and Absolute Witch, both by Kim Tae Yeon and both scanlated by the group #Korean-Manhwa. We've been bad about keeping things current, but the scanlations page is now fully up-to-date! Readers will find a new chapter of Absolute Witch and three new chapters of Banhonsa. (We even fixed the missing chapters in Banhonsa Vol. 1, for all you princessy types who actually care about reading things from the beginning.) Labels: manhwa, Scanlations
