The mind boggles
THERE'S GOING TO BE A RANMA ½ LIVE-ACTION ADAPTATION?!? How— how—did I not hear about this? And how can it possibly work? For those of you unfamiliar with Ranma ½ (you poor things), it's one of the most iconic series in manga history—a ridiculously enjoyable comedy/fantasy/martial arts epic about a boy cursed to turn into a girl when splashed with cold water, his short-tempered fiancé, and their various friends and acquaintances, 99% of whom want to marry and/or fight them. I've loved this story since I first started reading manga in high school, but I have no idea how it will suit a live-action format. Labels: Rumiko Takahashi

Wow. Just... wow.
Oh, man, you guys... anyone not reading Rumiko Takahashi's Rin-ne online is seriously missing out. Not only is it funny and weird and totally free, I'm pretty sure the the demon introduced in the latest chapter is an evil, possessed version of the Japanese lunchbox delicacy known as the "octopus wiener"--> Labels: Rumiko Takahashi

A manga in the hand...
If you don't like reading manga online, the paperback copy of the first volume of Rin-ne, the latest work from Rumiko Takahashi, will be out on October 20th. I've really been enjoying this series (although I suspect some of the humor isn't translating well), so I might pick up a copy even though I've been following the chapters online via the Rumic World site. Mark your calendars, anime geeks.
A quick reminder for disorganized Rumiko Takahashi fans: Inuyasha: the Final Act will begin airing in Japan on October 3rd. People who watched the original TV series on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim or have been catching up on the episodes via Hulu (like me) might not realize that the anime, despite being a zillion seasons long, ended well before the manga. This new series will cover the story featured in volumes 36 through 56 of the manga, and will feature the same production staff and voice cast. Labels: anime, Rumiko Takahashi

Takahashi's Rin-ne: an update
As promised, VIZ posted the first chapter of Rumiko Takahashi's new series Rin-ne today on the Rumic World website, and I trotted right over to read it. I'd give the first chapter an "A" for content*, but the online reading experience left something to be desired. On the plus side, it was in color, the site worked well, and the whole thing was free, which goes a long way with me. ("Free" is my favorite price.) Unfortunately, I think there were a lot of cultural references that went over my head--jokes about money, etc.--and it would have been really nice if Viz included a few explanatory notes. *Cute intro, with an emotional tone hovering halfway between Ranma and Inuyasha. Plus, you've got to love a story featuring a gigantic ghostly chihuahua. Labels: manga, Rumiko Takahashi

More Takahashi news!
Viz Media has sent out a press release announcing that Rumiko Takahashi’s new manga (which they call Rin-ne, rather than Kyōkai no Rinne, I notice) will be released simultaneously in Japan and the U.S. The chapters will be available in English via a new website: The Rumic World. Rin-ne begins on April 22, and new chapters will be released weekly. Unfortunately, I'm not seeing any mention of how much reading the online chapters might cost. I certainly hope they'll be free, but I don't know for certain. Labels: Rumiko Takahashi

Takahashi title announced!
The Japanese manga magazine Shonen Sunday has revealed the title of the latest manga from Rumiko Takahashi: Kyōkai no Rinne. The story (lit. "The Boundary of Rinne") will center on Sakura Mamiya, a girl with the ability to see ghosts. The manga will launch in the 21st issue of the magazine, which will ship on April 22. Woot! (Part II)
And the good news keeps coming! Viz Media has announced that they've picked up the new, as-yet-unnamed Rumiko Takahashi title (as expected), AND they've licensed Boys Over Flowers: Jewelry Box, a 70-page-long, two-installment story featuring Rui Hanazawa in the lead role. This is the second HYD "epilogue" written by series creator Yoko Kamio (the first one came out in 2006), and--as far as I know, anyway--it hasn't been scanlated yet, so I'm pretty stoked to read it. Inuyasha to end
After 12 action-packed years, comic goddess Rumiko Takahashi is ending Inuyasha. According to the Rumic World website: "Inuyasha is set to end after two more chapters with #558 wrapping up volume 56. An official announcement is expected in this week's issue of Shonen Sunday (vol. 28), with the final chapter being released in Shonen Sunday vol. 29, on sale June 18th." This announcement seems a little abrupt--I hope nothing is wrong in Ms. Takahashi's personal life... Labels: manga, Rumiko Takahashi

I didn't realize she was still writing these...
From Anime News Network: "Celebrated artist Rumiko Takahashi (Maison Ikkoku, Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha) will publish the latest chapter in her annual Rumic Theater series in this year's fifth issue (on sale on February 20) of Shogakukan's Big Comic Original magazine. The announcement was made in the magazine's current fourth issue (released on February 5). The "Shiawase List" (Happiness List) short story will center on a housewife who catches a momentary glimpse of her tranquil neighborhood's true form. As usual for new Takahashi works, the one-shot manga will have a color opening page. Viz Media has published two volumes of the Rumic Theater (Takahashi Rumiko Gekijō) short stories in North America." I can't believe I missed out on all of this Rumiko Takahashi awesomeness. Fire Tripper was the first anime I ever saw, so I've always had a soft spot for the Rumic World stories (even the crazy ones). Note: I'm especially sorry I haven't had a chance to read "Shake Your Buddha", which Wikipedia informs me is about a debate between "the future Buddha and an idiot yam fanatic during a food shortage over whose methods can lead to Japan's survival". Hey, who doesn't love an idiot yam fanatic? Labels: manga, Rumiko Takahashi
