GalleyCat informs me that Charlaine Harris has inked a deal with Ace Books to produce a three-volume graphic novel series called Cemetery Girl. The books will be co-written with Christopher Golden and illustrated by Don Kramer, and they're expected to hit shelves in 2013, the same year that will see the final volume of her Southern Vampire series.
Last year we made a list of last-minute, book-inspired Halloween costumes. Those are definitely still good options, but I ran across an even easier costume this year: dressing up as Sookie Stackhouse from the Charlaine Harris books and True Blood TV series. Now, ideally you'd go all-out and get a blond wig, but if you're low on cash you can just skip that and go as one of the other waitresses at Sookie's job (the ones with the high mortality rate). You'll need a pair of tiny shorts, sneakers, a tight white t-shirt, and a tray. Write "Merlotte's" on the shirt and you're golden! Best of all, at this time of year you'll probably be able to find tiny shorts and white t-shirts galore in the deepest recesses of the clearance aisle.
I wouldn't trick-or-treat in this, though. You'd freeze vital bits off.
I had to snicker when I read this Variety article about the sky-high ratings enjoyed by the recent episode of HBO's True Blood, which was the first HBO series episode to top 5 million viewers since the Sopranos finale in June of '07.
Now, I haven't seen this episode, but I have started watching the first season of True Blood on DVD, and from what I've heard about the second season, it's hardly surprising that a zillion people tuned in. This is a series with a fetching cast, oodles of violence, and--did I forget to mention?--town-wide orgies. It's got everything an HBO subscriber could hope for, and frankly I'm a little surprised it didn't hit the fifty-million-viewer mark straight out of the gate.
True Blood geeks better start digging through their couch cushions, because HBO has bottles of Tru-Blood available for pre-order, and they cost a whopping $4 apiece. Also, this is a "uniquely carbonated, slightly tart, lightly sweet blood orange drink", rather than the blood substitute drunk by the show's vampire cast, but whatever: it looks cool!
Although I do wonder what "uniquely carbonated" means...
Charlaine Harris fans take note: the True Blood: Season One DVD comes out this week, and Target is running a promotion where if you buy the DVD (which they're selling for $34.99, but I have no idea how that stacks up against other retailers) plus a Charlaine Harris book, you'll get a five-dollar Target gift card. So if you've been watching the show and you're curious about the books, now might be a good time to pick one up. I suggest spending the five bucks on munchies for your True Blood-viewing marathon.
Note: I don't know if this is a regional offer or what, so check with your local store before you take my word for it, okay?
Fans of True Blood, HBO's adaptation of Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse series, take note--they've posted a clip from the second season:
I don't care how good this show is, because I cannot get over how bad those accents are. I mean, Anna Paquin was reasonably plausible as a Southern girl in the X-men movies. What happened?
I'm told an early version of the pilot episode was leaked a few months ago, and people were not impressed, but I figure if this show is half as fun as its promotional materials we'll be golden.
And speaking of pretty girls lapping blood, the TV powers-that-be used the same charming motif for the teaser poster for Alan Ball's upcoming HBO show True Blood, which is based off of Wordcandy favorite Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse series:
Hmm. Effective, I suppose (although, if that's supposed to be the heroine, totally inaccurate, seeing as she's not a vampire). I'm much more impressed by the banner ads that apparently popped up all over Comic-Con advertising "Tru-Blood", the "synthetic blood nourishment beverage" that Harris's vampires drink:
Doesn't that look great? They're doing an awesome job with promotion for this show--there's a blog and a vampire dating service, too.
Apparently, HBO is producing a TV version of Charlaine Harris's Sookie Stackhouse novels, and it will star Anna Paquin, an actress I actually like! She's perfect for the role of a young, vulnerable woman with an unusual power--actually, she's already played that role and kicked ass in it.
The shock of getting good news regarding a TV/film adaptation of a Wordcandy book left me a little shaky, but I was able to regain my equilibrium by realizing that chances are still good that I'll hate it, regardless of who the main star is. So, yes, the world is still spinning safely on its axis. [Source]
