Hipster cruelty
I am very fond of bookends, but I'm only mildly tempted by these " Glass Half Bookends" from Urban Outfitters:  They look cool, and they're supposed to double as vases (although putting flowers in 'em might stain your books), but they're $58, and I'm concerned that the above image might encourage some dimwitted UO customer to actually use them as an aquarium. Safety first
Check out this owl-shaped bookend from Etsy artist Aprilfoss:  Pretty cute, huh? And, at $26, relatively affordable. Aprilfoss's owls come in a wide variety of colors and fabrics, and each one should be strong enough to hold up a couple of kids' books. Bibliophile home design?
...or not, as the case may be. I'm a big fan of the home decor site Apartment Therapy, but sometimes I'm amazed at how impractical they can be. Take, for example, this area, which they glowingly describe as a "bright book corner":  Um, what? Who would read there? The description mentions curling up with a book, but would anybody actually "curl up" on a metal chair? Plus, I don't see a reading lamp, and the only natural light source looks fairly high up on the wall. I'm not saying the space isn't cute, but "Highly decorated bookshelf space, anchored by chair too uncomfortable to actually sit upon" might be a more apt description. Dubious DIY
I'm just not sure about this upside-down bookshelf project:  It looks kind of cool, sure, but how do you get the books (especially the ones on the ends) down? And, once they're down, how do you put them back? Because it doesn't look like they'd just slide back into place, and I'm not exactly known for my patience. Instructions are available here. Books at work
Home decor blog Apartment Therapy has featured a lot of book-related pictures, links, and ideas lately. There's a post on making floating bookshelves that won't damage your books, an image of a bookshop counter made entirely out of books, and, last but definitely not least, this charming but only semi-useful bookcase:  I have no idea how much this bookshelf will cost, and I suspect I don't want to know. Bibliophile home decor
 Apartment Therapy has done a post on vertically stacked bookcases, featuring five types ranging in price from $110 to $298. I don't know: they might look cool, but I'm just not sold on these as a practical book storage solution. They look so... tippy. What happens if your books aren't centered properly? Does it bend paperbacks in the middle? Crack spines before their time? If anybody owns one, shoot me an e-mail and let me know. Labels: Bookshelves

Book storage with style
I just got the Chiasso catalog, which featured several covetable bookends. I particularly liked these: Bendit Bookends ($28 for a set of two)  Hand Bookends ($38)  Pretty, huh? Barnes and Noble takes on furniture, with meh-inducing results.
Has anybody else checked out B&N's new " Home" section? Frankly, I would think that a bookseller would offer a more practical book storage solution than this:  On the other hand, I did kind of like some of their lamps:  B&N is currently running a 20% off of one item sale, so if you're tempted by either one of these pieces, you might want to buy it now, seeing as they're a little expensive otherwise.
