In a particularly depressing bit of book-related news, someone stole 1,348 picture books valuing nearly $23,000 from a Washington State public library in Port Orchard. The missing titles represent nearly 20 percent of the library’s collection of children’s picture books, and include titles by Margaret Wise Brown, Eric Carle, Dr. Seuss, Maurice Sendak, Shel Silverstein, and Shaun Tan. Several local bookstores are holding book donation drives or donating books directly, and that's nice and all... but this is still such a bummer.Labels: Library news

It shows that many people are nice at heart -- here, the ones running the book drives-- but there are a few real jerks who just ruin it for the rest of us -- here, the thieves.

I think some of my bitterness about this is related to the December theft of the Auschwitz sign (which was later recovered). Ever since, whenever I hear about a pointless theft, I get all rage-y. You'd think people would hesitate before stealing from people like very young children (or, y'know, places like Nazi death camps)... but you'd be wrong.

I think that's precisely the point: to get others angry. Do good and not get noticed, or do bad and get lots of people upset. Whether the perpetrators reveal themselves (or get caught and get revealed) or not is not nearly as important as knowing that their handiwork has affected others.
Which sucks.

I donated a copy of Shaun Tan's 'The Arrival'. Here's hoping it can stand up to library handling!
