Ever since finishing Obernewtyn (our current Featured Book), I've been sulking over the discovery that author Isobelle Carmody's US, UK, and Canadian publishers chose to split her final two books in this series into four, meaning that readers in those countries have to pay twice as much. But I finally looked up the Australian price for the combined titles, and I officially take back my sulking: unless I'm screwing up my currency conversion, even a paperback version of her book The Stone Key costs more than $20 US dollars. Is that typical? Anybody reading this in Australia? And if so, how does anybody afford to buy books?Labels: Australia, Isobelle Carmody, Wordcandy main site

I don't know if this is typical, but I do know that Yahtzee (who does the hilariously snarky "Zero Punctuation" reviews of video games) often complains that video game prices are inflated in Australia. In one review, he refers to it as "having the nicer beaches tax." So, maybe many imports are loopy-expensive in Australia.

Hmm. I'm always interested in Australian authors (everything from their kids' books to their romance novels always seem so... robust), but I'd never heard of the price issue. Twenty dollars+ for a paperback seems INSANSE to me, but maybe people are paid more or something?
