Jumping the gun

Warner Bros. has acquired the movie rights to Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl's young adult novel Beautiful Creatures (the first book in a projected five-book-long series), despite the fact that it just came out yesterday.

Worried about letting the next Twilight slip through your fingers, guys?

That could be exactly it. It seems like everything in entertainment and "news" is in a rush these days to be first, since being second means missing out.

I'm hoping the WB's eagerness is a sign that the book is really good—like, why would they gamble on a five-book-series if the first one wasn't great?—but one can't help but wonder if they've chosen it because of the popularity of the whole horror/romance-lite genre rather than the book's inherent awesomeness.

Time (and a visit to the bookstore, unless the publisher is kind enough to send us a review copy) will tell, I suppose...
