Slate has a great
slide show up about kids' books set during tough financial times. They skipped a lot of my favorites (
Mama's Bank Account, about an immigrant Norwegian family in San Francisco in the early twentieth century, Betty Smith's
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and Noel Streatfeild's
Ballet Shoes), but they did include some great titles--everything from Margaret Sidney's
Five Little Peppers and How They Grew to Beverly Cleary's
Ramona and her Father.
